Texas Juneteenth Day Celebration, 1900 (Austin History Center, Austin Public Library)
Dear Readers,
Today we honor Juneteenth in the United States. Investopedia's office is closed and our newsletters are suspended for the day in observance.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 when Texas became the final U.S. State to formally proclaim its enslaved people free, thus ending the injustice of slavery entirely in the United States. This came following the end of the U.S. Civil War which was fought to end the institution.
This Juneteenth is especially important as we also recognize that the nation's struggle to end inequalities and injustices for our communities of color continues.
We'll be back on Monday.
